8 August 2014 – A delegation of the Security Council’s 1540 Committee has concluded a four-day visit to Malawi, conducted upon invitation by the Government.

Mr. Dovydas Spokauskas from the Permanent Mission of Lithuania to the United Nations and member of the 1540 Committee led the delegation, which included two experts supporting the Committee’s work as well as officers from the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa (UNREC).

UNREC assists the Togolese National Commission against SALW proliferation.
A workshop was held in Lomé on 26 and 27 June 2014 as a capacity-building effort to strengthen stockpile management practices among Togolese officials from defence and security forces. Organised by the National Commission against the proliferation, circulation and illicit trafficking of SALW in Togo, the workshop aimed to improve safety and security practices in stockpile management as well as increase the degree of ownership amongst responsible officials.

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) views the proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and their means of delivery as a threat to international peace and security. UNSC Resolution 1540 was adopted by the Security Council under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter in 2004.

Opportunities and Challenges for Women in the Field of International Peace and Security.
The Goethe Institute of Lomé and UNREC organized an evening event with Ms. Gabriele Kraatz-Wadsack, Chief of the Regional Disarmament Branch at the UNODA in New York on Tuesday 3rd of June. The interactive discussion provided female German-speaking students from the University of Lomé with an insight into the field of peace and disarmament. The event served to encourage young women to strive towards a career in this field.
