On 11 February, UNREC participated in a UNCT meeting on the common budget and the evolution of covid-19 pandemic in the host country and related mitigation measures.
On 2 February, UNREC participated in a UNIDIR-African Union-ECOWAS International Cyber Crisis virtual workshop including delivering opening remarks. UNREC provided support to secure interoperation and related administrative tasks.
On 16 December 2021, UNREC held a virtual meeting with the Delegate General for Peace and Security of the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and his Assistant on possible areas of collaboration between the two institutions.
On 16 December 2021, UNREC Director received the courtesy visit of the newly appointed Ambassador of Brazil to Togo, H.E. Nei FUTURO. Possible collaboration with Brazil peace/diplomatic institutes were discussed.
On 14 December 2021, UNREC had discussions with the UNSCAR team on the funding mechanism and perspectives for potential future UNSCAR priority engagements.
On 13 December 2021, at the request of the Liberia National Commission on Small Arms (LINCSA), UNREC held a virtual meeting with them. Among the requests for assistance, Liberia confirmed interest in the Amnesty Month Project. UNREC will follow up with CAB.
On 7 December 2021, UNREC’s Director met with Mr. Michael Matongbada, Researcher on violent extremism and illicit activities in the West Africa coastal countries: Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Togo.
From 29 November to 3 December 2021, UNREC took part in the Weapons and Ammunition Management Assessment in Togo, organized by the Economic Community of West-African States (ECOWAS) with technical support from UNIDIR, UNREC, AMAT and MAG.
From 28 November to 3 December 2021 in Togo, UNREC participated in a WAM baseline study conducted in Togo by UNIDIR for the Economic Community of West African States – ECOWAS.
On 25 November 2021, UNREC participated in a special UNCT session with UNICEF Regional Director on official visit to Togo, focusing on emerging issues including peace and security.
On 24 November 2021, UNREC had a virtual meeting with a Representative from the US Embassy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, discussing possible UNREC involvement in an arm marking and PSSM project in the DRC.
On 23 November 2021, UNREC held discussions with the Consultant of UNIDIR, Mr. Mohamed Lamine Coulibaly to prepare for the joint WAM baseline assessment mission in Togo to be conducted in Lomé from 30 November to 3 December 2021 by the Economic Community of West-African States (ECOWAS) with technical support from UNIDIR, UNREC, AMAT and MAG.
On 23 November 2021, UNREC participated in the workshop organised by the Fondation pour la Recherche Strategique on the Hague Code of Conduct on Weapons of Mass Destruction. UNREC provided a general presentation of its work on SALW control in the region, as well on the support provided by the RIODB to the UNSC Resolution 1540 Committee for the implementation of initiatives to counter the proliferation of WMD in Africa.
From 22 to 30 November 2021, AMAT experts carried out an assessment mission of special ammunition in Lomé, Kara and Niamtougou, in response to a request for assistance sent to UNREC by the Government of Togo.
From 22 to 26 November 2021, UNREC participated in the 52nd Meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security in Central Africa (UNSAC) and presented activities of the Regional Centre for the last six months. Extensive bilateral consultations with Member States have also been undertaken.
On 19 November 2021, UNREC sent its presentation on “Initiatives on Disarmament and Arms Control in the ECOWAS Region” to the Annual Coordination Meeting of National Commissions on Small Arms, organized by the ECOWAS Commission in Accra, Ghana, from 17 – 19 November 2021.
On 18 November 2021, UNREC participated in the CRSV MARA Working Group monthly meeting organised by the Women’s Protection Adviser of MINUSMA. UNREC exchanged with the DPO’s CRSV Team in the Policy and Best Practices Service of DPET on the new policy for preventing and responding to CRSV in field missions. On 18 November 2021, UNREC received the President of the NGO Groupe de Travail Femmes, Jeunes, Paix et Sécurité en Afrique de l’Ouest et au Sahel (GTFJPSAOS)/TOGO who expressed the desire to receive UNREC technical support to develop and implement gender sensitive peace education and disarmament projects.
On 16 November 2021, UNREC held a working session with Plan International requesting UNREC support to draft and submit an application to the UNSCAR call for proposals.
On 11 November 2021, UNREC presented on the gender and small arms control project during the second Monitoring and Evaluation Meeting organised by UNMAS in collaboration with the DRC’s National Commission on SALW.
On 27 October 2021, UNREC took part in a meeting hosted by CAB which was also attended by other Regional Centres, to brainstorm on possibilities for a successor process to the EUfunded project on gender mainstreaming in arms control.
On 25 October 2021, UNREC held a meeting with CAB concerning a project to develop WAM training materials for the UN peace operations, which UNODA manages in cooperation with DPO and AMAT. UNREC has agreed to host the pilot workshop in Lomé, which tentatively is scheduled to take place from 24 to 26 November.

On 20 October 2021, UNREC organized a meeting with the Parliamentary Forum on SALW to discuss possible collaboration, including reciprocal support for project proposals such as for UNSCAR.
On 15 October 2021, FRS requested assistance from UNREC for the organization of a workshop on 23 November in the DRC, which is entitled “ Le HCoC : opportunités et défis pour la République démocratique du Congo”.
On 13 October 2021, UNREC took part in a webinar on “Exploring the role of the Hague Code of Conduct (HCoC) and other CBMs in the field of missiles”, organized by the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (FRS).
On 7 and 22 October 2021, UNREC and UNODA Vienna Office met to discuss joint application for funding in the 2021 UNSCAR Call for Proposals. A draft proposal and a draft partnership agreement between the two UNODA offices were finalized. Related communications to beneficiary Member States have been sent. Finally, the Vienna Office finally decided to submit the proposal alone.
On 5 and 18 October 2021, UNREC held virtual meetings with CAB, AMAT and GICHD with respect to UNODA response to a request for technical assistance from the Republic of Togo for the assessment and disposal of certain special ammunition.
On 30 September 2021, UNREC participated in a virtual consultation on WAM and IED in the Sahel, coordinated by UNMAS. The current state of play as regards WAM and IEDs in the Sahel as well as options to support to region address these burning issues were discussed.
On 29 September 2021, UNREC participated in a webinar on nuclear weapons organized by the Fondation pour la Recherche Stratégique (FRS), on the following topic: ‘strategic risk reduction and the P5 process’.
On 29 September 2021, the Director was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Togo to discuss the cooperation between the Government of Togo and the Regional Centre. A note to file is sent separately.
On 28 September 2021, UNREC attended a briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Togo for the diplomatic community on Togo’s strategic engagement for peace and security in the Sahel.
On 24 September 2021, the Director met with Mr. Espoir Fadu, a Togolese artist who has been promoting disarmament through his work. He was also received by the High Representative during her visit to Lomé in 2019. Ways to promote peace and disarmament education were discussed.
On 20 September 2021, UNREC and EO were able to agree on closing the ATT Madagascar Project and OSIWA project as well as not to address the issue of accrued interests from all accounts, among others. UNREC is following up with further communications with France, Cameroon and Finland. The multiple donors contributed ATT fund is to be addressed, upon Senior Finance Assistant’s resumption of duty.
