From 9 to 20 May 2023, UNREC’s Director was on ground in Addis Ababa to prepare and 
participated in High Representative’s working visit to the African Union where she met AU Commission’s 
Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat and AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security 
(PAPS), on 16 and 17 May 2023. ODA and the AU reviewed existing collaboration and agreed 
to expand it to further advance peace, arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament in 
Africa, in support to the AU’s initiative to ‘Silencing the Guns’. The High Rep also met with
the leadership of the UN presence and diplomats and heads of internationals organizations 
working with the AU on how best to advance the partnership with the AU on disarmament.

On 4 April 2023, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, AU High Representative for the “Silencing the 
Guns” initiative, paid a courtesy call to UNREC, de-briefed from the AU’s perspective on his 
recent meeting with ODA’s High Representative and seized the opportunity to discuss ways 
and means to strengthen the cooperation between the AU and UNREC to advance the Lusaka 
Roadmap master plan to “Silencing the Guns” in Africa. He addressed the press at the end of 
his visit to UNREC.
