 On 13 July 2021, UNREC participated in a routine UNCT meeting focusing on the Covid-19 situation. The UNCT reiterated measures to increase vigilance and stringent adherence to social distancing measures as well as to encourage Staff Members and dependents to get anti-covid vaccination.

 From 13 to 16 July 2021, UNREC participated in the Consultative Meeting of the National Commissions on SALW of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) held in Dakar, Senegal. UNREC carried out a half-day workshop on the Module focused on Integrating Gender-sensitive Measures into SALW Control.

The Director and the Senior Finance &Administrative Assistant met, at their request, with the following institutions who are seeking UNREC support to develop master’s degrees in peace, security and humanitarian affairs: On 6 July 2021 with the University of Kara; On 29 July 2021 with the Ecole SupĂ©rieure d’Administration et de Gestion (ESAG).

 On 6 July 2021, UNREC participated in Fondation pour la Recherche Strategique’s webinar on confidence-building measures and new missiles technologies focusing on ways and means to encourage African Member States who have not yet adhered to the Hague code of conduct to do so.

On 30 June 2021, UNREC held a working session with the Executive Secretary of the Nairobi-based Regional Centre on Small Arms in the Great Lakes Region, the Horn of Africa and Bordering States (RECSA). The RECSA Executive Secretary, General Badreldin Elamin Abdelgadir wished to revive the cooperation of its organization with UNREC in the framework of the existing MOU with ODA and solicit UNREC support to enhance joint collaboration at national level with national commissions on SALW but also at strategic level with the African Union to advance its flagship initiative to ‘Silencing the Guns in Africa’.

 On 24 June 2021, UNREC participated in a webinar on Nuclear Security organized by the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) an African Union’s specialized agency. However, due to technical constraints, UNREC could not make its presentation as planned.

 From 22 to 24 June 2021, UNREC participated in a Regional meeting on the operationalization of the ECOWAS Chapter of the African Union’s initiative to “Silencing the Gun in Africa”, including how to strengthen the criminal justice response to illicit trafficking in firearms in West Africa. The meeting was organized by UNODC and ECOWAS and financed by Germany and France. UNREC made several presentations, including on how to prepare national action plans to fight the illicit flow of SALW. ECOWAS called for a tripartite UN-AU-ECOWAS meeting to coordinate the ECOWAS chapter of the AU’s initiative to “Silencing the Guns in Africa”.

 On 20 June 2021, UNREC participated in the celebration in LomĂ© of the international Refugee Day by the UNCT Under the coordination of the UNHCR.
